Magnetic L plates don’t stick to aluminium or plastic panels. Adhesive makes a mess of your car.
Gripper Mats™ create a secure hold — no glue, no damage.
L plates falling off your aluminium or plastic car panels?
Gripper Mats create a secure hold — without glue or damage.
Use Gripper Mats™ to hold adhesive L Plate stickers or magnetic L Plate signs to your car. They are easy to use and remove.
✔ Work on aluminium car panels
✔ Work on plastic bumpers
✔ Reusable & paint safe
Using learner driver plates shouldn’t be stressful. If your L plates keep slipping, won’t stay put, or your car has aluminium / non-magnetic panels where magnets don’t work, Gripper Mats™ give you a secure, temporary hold without adhesive mess.
Gripper Mats™ are smooth, reusable, no-adhesive grip mats designed and supplied by Proper Design. Place them on the back of your L plate to create a reliable “grip layer” that helps it stay in place while driving — and peel off cleanly when you’re done.
Important: L plates are not included
You’ll need to buy your L plate separately (magnetic or vinyl-style plate). Gripper Mats™ are the reusable “backing” that helps you mount it temporarily.
How it works (simple)
- Clean and dry the car surface.
- Place Gripper Mats™ on the back of your L plate.
- Press the L plate firmly onto the vehicle. Avoid placing the L plate over gaps between panels or sharp bodywork bends. Try to place it on from one side to the other so air bubbles don't get stuck.
- Remove after use and store flat on the packaging.
Why Gripper Mats™ for L plates?
- Works on aluminium / non-magnetic panels where normal magnetic plates won’t hold
- No adhesive, no residue
- Removable after each lesson (ideal for shared family cars)
- Reusable — remove and reapply again and again
- Paintwork-friendly when used on clean, smooth surfaces
Why L Plates Fall Off Modern Cars
- Aluminium panels - Aluminium is non-magnetic
- Plastic bumpers - Also non-magnetic. Modern cars use plastic panels
- Non-magnetic surfaces - That’s why L plates fail

- You should remove or cover them when the car isn’t being used by a learner (except driving school cars). GOV.UK+2GOV.UK+2
- Wales: a D plate can be used instead (or alongside an L plate). GOV.UK+1
- If you’re in Northern Ireland, requirements can differ—check NI guidance. nidirect
Safety note: Always position plates so they’re clearly visible and don’t obstruct your view, lights, or number plates.

FAQ
Will this work with magnetic L plates?
Yes — Gripper Mats™ act as the removable “grip layer” between the magnetic plate and the car, especially helpful on aluminium and other non-magnetic surfaces.
Will this work with vinyl L plates?
Yes. If your “vinyl” L plate is designed to be removable (not a permanent adhesive sticker), Gripper Mats™ can help provide a more secure temporary hold. If it’s a permanent adhesive decal, which are very difficult to remove and leave a sticky residue on your car, you can make it removable by using it with Gripper Mats™. This is a great low cost option.
Do I need one for the front and rear?
UK rules require L plates to be visible from the front and rear when a learner is driving. GOV.UK+1

I recently bought a set of Gripper Mats because the magnetic L plates on my car kept falling off. It turns out the panels on modern cars aren’t always magnetic, so the plates just wouldn’t stay in place.
These mats solved the problem instantly. You simply place the mat between the car and the magnetic plate and it grips both surfaces securely. My L plates now stay exactly where I put them, even when driving at higher speeds.
What I really like is that there’s no glue, no residue, and no risk of damaging the paintwork. You can remove and reposition them as many times as you like, which is perfect if you need to take the plates on and off.
Such a simple idea but it works brilliantly. If your magnetic L plates won’t stick to your car, these are absolutely worth getting.
Finally found a way to attach Lplates to the bonnet on my MercedesBenz Work great but a bit pricey
Stick like mad
I am a driving instructor and have, for the last month been using these Gripper Mats on my vehicle. I was a little sceptical at first sight but I am happy to admit that these are an excellent product. I highly recommend them to all learner drivers, parents and fellow instructors, particularly if your vehicles have aluminium or plastic panels but also if you just want the reassurance of the L plate staying put - magnetic and static cling signs are less than reliable. I chose to combine the Gripper Mats with some magnetic L plates that I already had but my understanding is that they can also be used with sticker versions as well.
I saw these recommended on facebook. They are very good. Solved the problem of my L plates coming off.
